DAAD-Leibniz-Scholarships for Doctoral Candidates and Post-Docs


This programme is open to graduates, Ph.D. students and Post-Docs aiming to carry out research work at one of the participating Leibniz Institutes. Scholarships can be awarded for a period from 6 to 36 months. It is also possible to gain a doctorate in Germany. .Applications for a „DAAD-Leibniz-Scholarship“ need to be submitted to the relevant diplomatic missions of the Federal Republic of Germany or to the DAAD regional offices and cannot be submitted direct to DAAD Head Office in Bonn.

Not all Leibniz Institutes can join the DAAD-Leibniz-Scholarship at present. In any case candidates have the possibility to apply for a usual DAAD Scholarship (here all Leibniz Institutes are eligible as host institutes) and in parallel for DAAD-Leibniz-Scholarship. 

The Leibniz Association comprises 80 non-university research institutes and service facilities for research. Leibniz Institutes work interdisciplinary and combine basic and applied research of national significance. They are obliged to scientific excellency. The mission of each Leibniz Institute defines possible research topics. Objective

The „DAAD-Leibniz-Scholarships“ provide young foreign academics and scientists with an opportunity to complete a research project or a programme of continuing education and training at a Leibniz Institute. The scholarships are financed by the participating Leibniz Institutes and awarded according to the regular DAAD-scholarship conditions. The institutes involved in this programme and their research fields can be found in the annex. Further information are available at the website of the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft or the Leibniz Institutes.

Scholarships and Duration

  • Type A: Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Germany (max. 36 months)
  • Type B: Research projects with the aim of gaining a Doctorate in the home country (6 to 24 months)
  • Type C: Research projects for Post-Docs (6 to 24 months).

The scholarships will be initially awarded for a period of up to 12 months. Extensions depend on whether or not the host institute confirms that the previous research/ study period has been successfully completed.

Value

  • Type A / B: The monthly scholarship value will be minimum 975,00 euros with additional payment of a lump sum for international travel expenses and health insurance. If necessary a family allowance can be granted.
  • Type C: The monthly scholarship value will be 1.840,00 Euro; no further allowances can be granted.

Requirements

  • Applications for a „DAAD-Leibniz-Scholarship“ are open to excellently-qualified university graduates who hold a Diplom or Master’s degree at the time they commence the supported research (Type A or B) or who have already gained their doctorate/PhD (Type C).
  • The most important selection criteria are the previous study and research achievements in one of the research fields of the participating Leibniz Institutes (see annex).
  • German language skills are generally required; the host Leibniz Institute is responsible for deciding on whether or not to fund a two-months language course. In the natural sciences and in engineering disciplines, in particular, and when English is spoken at the host institute, proof of good English language skills (TOEFL: 550/217) may also be accepted.
  • Applicants with the purpose of gaining a doctorate in the home country (Type B) have to provide proof that that they are admitted as Ph.D candidates at a university in the home country.
  • Applicants for a Type A scholarship are subject to an age limit of 32, although exceptions are possible; applicants for a Type B scholarship should not be older than 36 years at the time of application. Applicants for a Type C scholarship should not have exceeded the age of 42 years. Applicants who have already been in Germany for more than two years when the research grant begins cannot be considered.
  • Special information for medical students: University degrees must be equivalent to the German „Approbation“ (license to practise medicine) - that means proof of at least seven years of specialist training and permission to practise as a medical doctor in the home country (registered doctor).

  • Detailed information on what application papers need to be submitted can be found on the Application form for „Research Grants and Study Scholarships“ („Antrag auf ein Forschungs-/Studienstipendium“), on the internet (http://www.daad.de/en/form) or can be obtained from the diplomatic and consular representations of the Federal Republic of Germany, from DAAD Lektors, from the DAAD regional offices or Information and Advice Centres, and from partner organisations.
  • Applicants are expected to submit abstracts of their final dissertation or of their doctoral/ PhD thesis plus a statement of their reasons for applying for the fellowship.
  • It is not necessary to present a confirmation of supervision from the host Leibniz Institute with the the application, but applicants are recommended to inform oneselve and gather comprehensive information at the website of the Leibniz Institutes.
  • The DAAD will not consider incomplete applications.
  • Applications must not be sent directly to the DAAD head office in Bonn or to the Leibniz Institutes.
